Mark Your Calendar for Disney's The Lion King

Mark your calendars for April 9 – May 5, 2013 because the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center’s most requested Broadway musical will be back at the Fox Cities P.A.C.! It’s been almost five years since Disney's The Lion King first delighted audiences in Northeast Wisconsin with its amazing stagecraft, and next spring 18 trucks will once again roll into town with the makings of a show you’ll never forget.

To many, staging The Lion King seemed impossible. The epic conflict between lions worked beautifully in animated film – but onstage? But Walt Disney Chairman Michael Eisner and Disney Theatrical Producers Peter Schneider and Thomas Schumacher believed in the power of The Lion King’s story. They turned to Julie Taymor, a director and designer well known for mythical staging inspired by international theatrical forms. Taymor was excited by the challenge.

“When I looked at the film… I said to myself, what is working in this film for me? What’s the most daunting challenge? That’s what I like to do – the sheer fact that it’s very hard to do is a great challenge to me.”

The Lion King is unique in that we see how the magic works onstage. There’s no attempt to cover up the wheels and cogs that make it all happen. The human beings that control the puppets and wear the animal masks are fully seen. As an audience member at The Lion King, you have an important job: with your imagination, you are invited to mix the “animal” with the human into a magical whole. As Julie Taymor says, “When the human spirit visibly animates an object, we experience a special almost life-giving connection. We become engaged by both the method of storytelling as well as the story itself.”

It’s Back – Mamma Mia Returns for the Center’s 10th Anniversary

It seems fitting that the first Broadway show to grace the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center’s stage is part of the theater’s 10th Anniversary Season. Returning for its fifth Appleton run, Mamma Mia! is decidedly a Fox Cities favorite. Over the years, it has drawn tens of thousands of visitors to the Center, many for the first time.

But that’s the magic of Mamma Mia! In ABBA’s enigmatic poetry of  pop hits, Catherine Johnson imagined a Greek island and a musical about a woman whose daughter is getting married and wants desperately for her mystery father to walk her down the aisle. With all of the pieces you expect in a great musical, you’ll find flowing story that is positively relatable, immensely entertaining and driven by songs which have already stood the test of time.

Mamma Mia! officially kicks off the 2012/13 10th Anniversary Season August 21-26. Whether you have yet to see it or you can’t wait to see it again, mark your calendars for some summer fun. Want a chance to win tickets to opening night? Visit the Fox Cities P.A.C.'s Facebook page and enter the Broadway-A-Day Sweepstakes!

Mamma Mia! is an optional add-on to the 2012/13 Kimberly-Clark Broadway Across America Fox Cities Season Ticket Package which includes Blue Man Group, Elf, Catch Me If You Can, The Addams Family and the 2011 Tony Award-winning Best Play, War Horse. Be part of the celebration all season long with Season Tickets!

Bringing War Horse to Life

With a production called War Horse, one might imagine the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center installing a hayrack in its star dressing room and stocking up on carrots and apples for such a high-profile star as Joey.

But in fact, one of the most remarkable aspects of this story of friendship is that the main character ceases to exist until just before show time when three puppeteers take their places; one at Joey’s head, one inside his forequarters and one controlling his hind. Together, the three bring to life Handspring Puppet Company’s 120 pound breathing sculpture. Within minutes, Joey grows to eight feet high, 10 feet long and sturdy enough for an actor to ride. He’s complete with a moveable tail and ears to replicate the real animal with such accuracy even horse enthusiasts might forget he’s constructed of cane.

Yet the Tony Award®-winning puppetry is only one component of this play based on Michael Morpurgo’s novel. At the heart of this story are Joey’s relationships with his caretakers. As a foal we see him growing under the watchful eye of young Albert. When Joey is sold to the cavalry, Albert swears he will find him and bring him home. Joey, however, discovers courage and friendship on both sides of the front in a tale The New York Daily News called, “spellbinding, by turns epic and intimate.”

The first national tour of the 2011 Tony Award-winning Best Play War Horse will stop at the Fox Cities performing Arts Center June 25-30, 2013. You can secure your tickets today as part of a Kimberly-Clark Broadway Across America – Fox Cities Season Ticket Package. For more information about becoming a Season Ticket Holder, visit foxcitiespac.com!

Would you like a chance to win two tickets to opening night? This week, the Center’s giving away two tickets for each Broadway show. Enter the Broadway-A-Day Sweepstakes on the Center’s Facebook page for your chance to win!

Snaps for The Addams Family on Tour

One line from the delightfully macabre new touring production of The Addams Family sums up the basic premise of the show: “When you’re an Addams, the standard answers don’t apply.”

The easy answer is that they’re not your average family. You might be right in hoping they never move in next door, but they definitely won’t overstay their welcome at the Fox Cities P.A.C. February 26 – March 3, 2013. After what Variety called “scary reviews” in Chicago and New York, the creative team went back to the drawing board and has created a touring musical that lives up to the family name.

The Addams Family – husband and wife Gomez and Morticia, the kids Wednesday and Pugsley, and extended family, Uncle Fester, Grandma and Lurch – were the brainchildren of cartoonist Charles Addams. They’ve existed in various forms in his cartoons since the 1930s, but finally were adopted as The Addams Family for the 1960s. Since then, his oddly charming family has been featured in multiple television series and motion pictures.

So why are they so popular? Well, just because the Addams aren’t normal, doesn’t mean they don’t have normal problems. In this production, Wednesday, the ultimate princess of darkness, has a met a boy – a respectable boy she plans to marry as long as her family doesn’t scare him off. Honestly, is there anything scarier than meeting the in-laws?

The Addams Family is one of five exciting shows in the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center’s 2012/13 Kimberly-Clark Broadway Across America – Fox Cities Season Tickets Package. Secure your seat today at foxcitiespac.com!

Enter the Center's Broadway-A-Day Sweepstakes for a chance to win  two tickets to opening night of The Addams Family, and check back every day this week at 11:00 a.m. for another chance to win!
