Broadway Buzz: Lombardi Paves the Way for Magic/Bird

Attention NBA Fans! With all the Lombardi excitement, have you felt left out because Broadway didn’t have a story for you? Don’t worry, a new show is in the works.
Magic/Bird, a new play by Wisconsin’s own Eric Simonson (Lombardi), will showcase the lives of basketball stars Larry Bird and Earvin “Magic” Johnson in the 1980s. Sports enthusiasts and Lombardi producers Tony Ponturo and Fran Kirmser told Variety they are creating Magic/Bird as a follow-up and hoping to make sports theater into a series or genre. Maybe we’ll see a Brewers story one of these years!
The initial rivalry between Larry Bird and Magic Johnson grew into a famous friendship as they battled for three championships on the court and now both living legends are sharing their history through a series of interviews with Simonson. The NBA has added its official endorsement, so watch for Magic/Bird to open on Broadway in spring 2012.
If you’re celebrating the news of the upcoming NFL season, tickets are still available for Lombardi: A Reading by the Broadway Cast at the Fox Cities P.A.C. July 28-30!
